Table Read: Behind the Scenes of "Ellis"
I was recently invited to the table read for Ellis — and let me tell you, it was such a lovely gesture from the production team. Not every actor gets the invite, so it’s always a privilege when you do.
So, when do actors get invited to table reads?
It depends on a few factors:
When you're cast – If you're brought on board early, before filming starts, there’s a higher chance you’ll be included.
The size of your role – If you’ve got just one line, you probably won’t be there (purely for logistical reasons). Productions often hire a dedicated actor just for reading one-liner parts to keep things efficient.
Pro tip: If you’re a strong reader, consider reaching out to casting offices and putting yourself forward for table reads. It’s a great way to get in the room, meet decision-makers, and build relationships.
Your First Table Read: What to Know
It’s not an audition – So breathe! No one’s judging your performance.
Purpose – Table reads help writers and production hear the script out loud and spot any issues before shooting starts.
Be professional – You’ll be meeting lots of new people, and you may not know who’s who. I’ve seen actors casually criticise lines, not realising they were talking to the writer! So be careful — always lead with kindness and curiosity.
Make connections – Use this time to quietly observe, listen, and connect with the team. You never know who you’ll work with again.
A table read is a golden opportunity to be part of the storytelling process, so enjoy it!
