On Set of Ellis, Belfast – Tips for First-Time TV Actors
I’m currently on set in Belfast, filming the second season of Ellis, and I’ll be here for the next eight days. My first day was a whirlwind — I had my make-up test and costume fitting. Going through those motions again reminded me of a few important things that I’d love to pass on to any young actors who haven’t had their first TV job yet.
The Make-Up Test
Your make-up test is there for a reason. The team will check if you have any allergies to the products and experiment with looks to suit your character.
In my case, I rarely play glamorous characters, so I’m used to minimal make-up — often the goal is to make me look tired rather than polished. Remember, it’s not our job necessarily to look “pretty.”
And here’s a big NO-NO: never go to the bathroom and touch up your face after the make-up artist is done. Trust me, make-up artists always notice — and they’ll mention it to the directors and producers. In this business, your reputation is everything. Longevity is key, so do yourself a favor and don’t earn a reputation for being “difficult to work with.”
Costume Fittings
The same principle applies to costumes. You don’t always need to look “pretty” — that’s not the priority for a lot of characters. But you do want to make sure you’ll be comfortable doing whatever action is required on set. It’s also wise to wear nude underwear so nothing peeks out or clashes under your clothes.
I hope these small bits of advice help you feel more prepared — and enjoy your own fittings and make-up tests when the time comes. Every day on set is a chance to grow into your role, respect the process, and appreciate the talented crew that supports you.
Happy acting! ✨
